Tesla Sales Jump in Northern Europe in October as Chinese Brands Hit a Record in Norway
Tesla registrations rose 248% in Sweden and 131% in Norway in October 2026, but Chinese brands took a record 22.5% of Norway's new car market.
Tesla's sales rose sharply in Northern Europe in October 2026. New registrations were up 248% in Sweden, 131% in Norway and 34% in Denmark compared with October 2025, according to national registration data reported by Reuters on November 2. At the same time, Chinese car brands reached a new record share of the Norwegian market.
What happened
In Norway, the world's most electric car market, Tesla registered 1,548 new cars in October, giving it 9.8% of all new passenger car registrations. Norway's road traffic information council (OFV) data shows it was Tesla's best October on record there, as Drive Tesla Canada and other outlets reported. Almost all of those cars – 1,429 – were the Model Y.
In Sweden, figures from the industry body Mobility Sweden showed Tesla's registrations more than tripling year on year. In Denmark, Tesla grew 34%, but it still trailed several Chinese brands – BYD, Leapmotor, Xpeng and MG – in the monthly ranking.
Part of the jump reflects a weak starting point: Tesla's European sales were low in late 2025, so October 2026 is being compared with a soft month a year earlier.

What it means for drivers
- More competition, more choice. In Northern Europe, buyers now choose between Tesla, European brands and a fast-growing list of Chinese brands such as BYD, Xpeng, Leapmotor and MG. More competition usually means sharper pricing, better equipment and more lease and financing offers.
- The Model Y is still the benchmark. In Norway, the Model Y alone accounted for more than nine in ten Tesla registrations. If you are comparing electric SUVs, our Tesla Model Y guide covers its range, charging times and real-world costs, so you can compare rivals against it.
- Compare the total cost, not just the price. Newer brands can be cheaper to buy but may have a smaller service network and less certain resale values. Our guide to what to know before buying an electric car lists the questions to ask.
What happens next
Larger markets such as Germany, the UK, France and Italy publish their October figures over the next few days, and the European car manufacturers' association ACEA publishes its EU-wide October data later in November. Those numbers will show whether Tesla's recovery extends beyond the Nordic countries – and how far Chinese brands' gains reach across Europe.
