BYD Sells Over 300,000 Electric Cars in a Single Month for the First Time
BYD sold 305,743 battery-electric cars in October 2026, its first month above 300,000, while its plug-in hybrid sales fell 17%. Exports more than doubled.
BYD, the world's largest maker of electric cars, sold 305,743 battery-electric passenger cars in October 2026 – the first time the Chinese company has passed 300,000 fully electric sales in a single month. Its total sales of new-energy vehicles (battery-electric cars plus plug-in hybrids) reached 490,168, up about 11% from October 2025, according to figures BYD published on November 1.
The bigger story is the mix: BYD is selling far more fully electric cars and fewer plug-in hybrids, and a growing share of its cars is now sold outside China.
What happened
BYD's battery-electric sales rose 37% year on year in October and set a monthly record for the third month in a row. At the same time, sales of its plug-in hybrids fell 17% to 177,382. Battery-electric models made up about 63% of BYD's passenger car sales in the month, compared with roughly 51% a year earlier, according to CnEVPost's analysis of BYD's monthly data.
Exports were the other standout. BYD sold 170,194 cars outside China in October, more than double the 83,904 it exported in October 2025, while its sales inside China fell about 11%. From January to October, BYD's overseas sales reached 1,513,154 vehicles, up 94%, as electrive also reported.
Key numbers
| BYD, October 2026 | Sales | Change vs Oct 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Total new-energy vehicles | 490,168 | +11% |
| Battery-electric passenger cars | 305,743 | +37% |
| Plug-in hybrid passenger cars | 177,382 | −17% |
| Sold outside China | 170,194 | +103% |
| Sold in China | 319,974 | −11% |
To put the scale in perspective, Electrek points out that Kelley Blue Book estimates just over 262,500 electric vehicles were sold in the entire United States in the third quarter of 2026 – fewer than BYD's battery-electric sales in October alone.
Year to date, though, BYD's total sales are still about 2% lower than in the first ten months of 2025, because its plug-in hybrid sales and its sales in China have weakened. October's growth comes mainly from fully electric cars and exports.
What it means for drivers
- More BYD models outside China. With exports doubling, BYD is selling in more countries across Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia. Its premium brand Denza has also launched in Europe. If you are shopping for an electric car in these markets, expect BYD to be an increasingly common option – and a source of price pressure on other brands.
- The shift is toward fully electric cars. BYD built much of its growth on plug-in hybrids, but its own sales now show buyers moving to battery-electric models. If you are deciding between a plug-in hybrid and a fully electric car, our guide to the pros and cons of electric cars explains the trade-offs.
- Check local support before you buy. In markets where a brand is new, the dealer and service network may still be small. Our checklist of what to know before buying an electric car covers warranty, servicing and resale value questions worth asking.
What happens next
According to Electrek, BYD expects its exports to reach about 2 million vehicles by the end of 2026 and more than 2.5 million in 2027. Its November and December results will show whether the battery-electric record streak continues into the end of the year. We will cover the full-year numbers when BYD publishes them in early January.
