How this calculator works
MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) is the U.S. EPA's way of comparing electric cars with gas cars. It is based on the energy in one gallon of gasoline, which the EPA counts as 33.7 kWh of electricity.
MPGe = 33.7 ÷ kWh used per mile. So a car that uses 28 kWh per 100 miles (0.28 kWh per mile) is rated at about 120 MPGe, or about 3.6 miles per kWh.
MPGe compares energy, not cost. To compare running costs, the calculator also shows what the car's electricity costs per 100 miles and what fuel economy a gas car would need to cost the same per mile.
Frequently asked questions
What does MPGe mean?
Miles per gallon equivalent. It shows how far an electric car can travel on the amount of electricity that contains the same energy as one gallon of gasoline – 33.7 kWh according to the EPA.
How do I convert MPGe to miles per kWh?
Divide the MPGe figure by 33.7. For example, 120 MPGe ÷ 33.7 ≈ 3.6 miles per kWh.
Is a higher MPGe always cheaper to run?
A higher MPGe means the car uses less energy, so it is cheaper to run at the same electricity price. But your actual cost depends on where you charge: public fast charging can cost several times more per kWh than home charging.
