Off-Peak EV Charging Savings Calculator

EV and time-of-use tariffs offer cheap electricity at night but often a higher price during the day. Enter your driving, your current tariff and the EV tariff you are considering to see whether it would really lower your whole electricity bill.

How this calculator works

The calculator works out how much electricity your car uses each month (distance ÷ efficiency, plus about 10% charging losses) and adds the rest of your home's use.

On your current tariff, everything is charged at one price. On the EV tariff, the part of your car charging and home use that happens in the cheap overnight hours is charged at the off-peak rate, and the rest at the day or peak rate. The difference is your saving – or extra cost.

The higher day rate matters: if you use a lot of electricity during the day, an EV tariff can cost more than it saves. Standing charges are not included, so compare those separately.

Frequently asked questions

How much can an off-peak EV tariff save?

For a driver covering about 1,000 miles a month, moving charging from a typical standard rate to a cheap night rate can save several hundred dollars or pounds a year. The exact amount depends on the rates and on how much of your home use happens during the day.

Do EV tariffs make daytime electricity more expensive?

Often, yes. Many EV and time-of-use tariffs have a day rate above the standard rate. That is why it is important to compare your whole bill, not just the price of charging.

How do I make sure my car charges off-peak?

Set a charging schedule in your car or charger app, or use a smart charger linked to your energy supplier. Some tariffs control the charging times automatically.
